A loan helped to buy pandanus to use for her weaving business.

Makeleta's story

This is Makeleta. She is married and a mother of eight kids and a grandmother of three grandkids. Her husband is a farmer who can plant and grow crops to feed the family. This family consists of 10 people. They all live together under the same roof.

They make a living from the weaving done by Makeleta. Currently, she still runs this weaving business. Her husband spends his time at their own farm to plant crops to feed them which is good for them to minimize the costs that they spend buying crops from others.

Makeleta can weave taovala only by herself. She can weaves taovala within one week and design it with her own design. The price of the taovala depends on what size and style of the taovala chosen by the customer. Once the taovala is ready she sells it to the local people and some buyers from overseas but she prefer to export the taovala to overseas for marketing. She receives lots of orders from her regular customers but she doesn't have enough pandanus. This is why she applied for this loan to help her buy more pandanus to use for her weaving business.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
