Ly is a married woman living with her family in a remote commune of Dien Bien province, Vietnam. Her childhood was associated with hardship and deprivation, and she is illiterate because her family could not afford for her to go to school. She has been farming since she was a child and now continues to maintain it with her husband and two children as the main source of family income. Her agricultural activities are diverse which include growing rice, maize, cassava and raising cattle. She has been rearing buffalo for years. She engages in feeding them with available food at home and grazing them in a natural environment.
Ly started with the desire to expand her husbandry business by buying one more buffalo with this loan and support from the Anh Chi Em program and Kiva lenders. Profits from this investment in the future will allow her to buy more poultry. She also wants to try raising and repairing her house. She hopes that all of her efforts will help her family have a more prosperous life. In this photo, she is standing in the right corner.
