A loan helped to invest in supplies to grow her hammock weaving business.

Nisachol's story

Nisachol grew up in a rural hill tribe village in Northern Thailand during the 1980s and 1990s, where schooling was unavailable, and working in the fields was a necessity for survival. Without a single day of formal education, she spent her early years helping her family sustain their life through farming. But as forest restrictions tightened, her family’s traditional way of life became increasingly unsustainable.

With six children ranging from ages 3 to 15, Nisachol and her husband faced the challenge of finding a reliable source of income to support their growing family. Artisan hammock weaving offered the perfect solution, allowing her to stay in the village, close to her extended family, while building a stable source of income. Despite not being able to read the design sheets, Nisachol learns each pattern with the help of her oldest daughter, and memorizes them after weaving a few hammocks.

After years of hardship, she finally sees a brighter future ahead. In recent years, her business has expanded, and she even earned extra income by teaching others to weave. With this Kiva loan, Nisachol plans to continue strengthening her business and further improving her family’s living conditions. She proudly reflects on her journey and the visit from a Kiva fellow, where she showcased her growth and new sewing skills—a testament to her resilience and drive to succeed.
