A loan helped a member to buy corn, eggs, cream, and margarine.

Mujeres El Porvenir Group's story

Thirty-six-year-old Sandra, a mother of three children who range in age from six to thirteen, is married to a day laborer. She only had six years of formal education because her father did not want her to continue to attend school. Her children are in kindergarten, second, and third grades.

Sandra has been in her own bakery business for three years and takes custom orders. For two years she has been raising chickens that she sells from her home. Her husband and an employee help her during busy times like holidays and birthdays when cakes and pies are in great demand.

Sandra's goal is to have her own bakery location where she can exhibit all her delicious confections. She is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy flour, eggs, cream, and margarine at wholesale prices.

Sandra and six other Maya Kaqchikel women, who live in the department of Solola, formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres El Porvenir.” They participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans; monthly educational training in business, health, family, and women; and bi-monthly health care services including exams, consults, and family planning. Recent topics for the training have been about savings and the dangers of over-indebtedness. The program is essential for their growth and success as women, mothers, and entrepreneurs since many have little or no formal education and healthcare services are challenging to access.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for learning about Sandra and her friends!
