A loan helped a member to buy more chickens, pigs and sheep, as well as feed for them.

Los Angeles Group's story

Raising poultry and animals is a viable way for women who live in rural areas of Guatemala to help support their households, educate their children and create new opportunities for economic success.

Thirty-one-year-old Otilia is one of these women. She is married and has a 3-year-old son. A year ago her husband left to find work in the United States. Otilia was able to attend school for eight years. She began raising chickens, pigs and sheep when quite young. She sells in the local market in the department/state of Huehuetenango.

Her goal is to enlarge her poultry/livestock business and add other kinds of animals. She applies for her third Kiva loan to buy more chickens, pigs, and sheep, as well as food for them. With her energy and determination, she is sure to succeed.

Otilia has joined six other women and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Los Angeles” or “The Angels." They all have the same animal husbandry businesses as Otilia. Their monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program, is vital for their success as women, mothers and entrepreneurs. A facilitator shares relevant information about health, nutrition, hygiene, women’s issues, family matters and effective business management information. Using games, role playing, pictures and diagrams, the facilitator makes learning about these topics interesting and fun!

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to Otilia and her friends!
