A loan helped to support a cacao cooperative to improve the livelihoods of 400 organic cacao farmers in the Amazon basin.

Kulkao's story

Kulkao works with over 400 smallholder farmers in remote areas of the Amazon basin, supporting them to grow organic cacao while promoting sustainable agriculture. Kulkao pays producers fair prices, creating reliable, stable incomes for households and communities that are more than double the income cacao farmers can make on the informal market.
As members of Kulkao, local farmers, including women and Indigenous groups, receive hands-on support in regenerative, organic farming methods. This training supports farmers to improve the quality of the crops they grow while making their farms more climate resilient.
At its organic-certified processing plant in Huánuco, Kulkao offers stable employment to 50 people from rural areas where dignified jobs are often scarce. Here, the cacao is transformed into cocoa butter, powder, and nibs, which are sold locally and internationally to markets in Europe and North America. Each step of production is carefully monitored to maintain high standards and ensure traceability, preventing contamination and supporting organic practices.
Your loan will support Kulkao to improve its gender practices to reach more women farmers, offering them technical support to help them to grow their businesses. It will also support Kulkao to boost its production capacity and employ more individuals from rural areas at its processing plant. By supporting Kulkao, you’re supporting farmers committed to sustainable practices and conserving the forest.

This loan is special because:

It supports businesses that are too big for microfinance but too small for banks.
