A loan helped to buy a variety of supplies.

Maria Jose's story

Maria is a young 20-year-old who lives in a rural area in the department/state of Suchitepequez. She is married to a barber and they have an 18-month-old son.

Maria shares that she studied medicine for a few years as a high school student but left school because she got married. Three years ago she joined her husband and opened a hair cutting and beauty salon in a rented space. The business has grown and has attracted more clientele and so they now have an employee who works in an additional locale.

Maria wants to open her own beauty business in the same space as her husband’s barber shop. Her goal is to attract more clientele and employ more people from her community. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy hair cutting and beauty supplies, as well as equipment for both locales. She advertises her services of hair cutting and tinting, as well as applying make-up online.

Maria grows as a woman, mother and entrepreneur via the Friendship Bridge “Bridge to Success” program. Her goal is to take her business to a higher level. A technical advisor offers her targeted training every two weeks. Together, they develop plans for Maria to identify her goals that she hopes to attain at the end of her loan cycle.

Thank you, Kiva lenders for helping women like Maria, empower themselves and successfully develop their businesses.
