A loan helped to buy fresh kava plants, a steel pounder, and packaging/storage supplies.

Makelesi's story

Being a mother of five children hasn’t discouraged Makelesi from running a business. She wants a loan to help expand her enterprise supplying kava. She saw an opportunity, as her village neighbours consume kava almost every day, especially at functions or social gatherings. She earns $50 a day on regular days, and more when there is a big local function. Her profit will help Makelesi provide for her family’s needs, such as housing, food, and the bills she struggles to meet.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
