A loan helped to purchase organic hens and organic feed for them.

Meedoe's story

She is a 63-year-old member of the Akha tribe living in Wawee community in the hills of Northern Thailand, near the Myanmar border.

She is asking for a loan to purchase 800 hens and organic feed them to produce organic free-range eggs for Hilltribe Organics (HTO). This social enterprise created the market for organic free-range eggs in Thailand, using organic agriculture to help economically disadvantaged farmers like her out of poverty. This loan will be her first loan with Kiva for her HTO egg farm.

Before she started with HTO, she used to grow conventional vegetables on her family land and could barely make ends meet. Caring for her hens and selling their eggs provides her and her family with a continuous monthly income and allows her to have a respectable life.

Hilltribe Organics was named The Most Sustainable Farming Model in Thailand in 2022 by the Thailand Department of Livestock Development and won the 2022 global Sustainable Food Farming Award from UKNGO Compassion in World Farming.

This loan is special because:

It supports vulnerable hill tribe communities in the northern region of Thailand.
