A loan helped a member to buy bread, spices and ingredients for her recipes.

Las Lupitas Group's story

Sixty-eight year old Reyna, mother of eleven adult children over the age of twenty-five and grandmother of twenty-eight, shares that her children have an average of eight years of formal education and eight are married. Her husband is a day laborer.

For ten years, Reyna has sold firewood from her home. She also takes special orders for her delicious tamales that she also sells on the street. Five years ago, Reyna began buying and selling bread. Her daughters help her with these businesses. Her goals are to increase the size of her businesses and with her income, cover more personal expenses and help out her huge family. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy more bread, spices and firewood.

Reyna was elected President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Lupitas” in the department/state of San Marcos by seven Maya Mam ladies. Several of them have the same businesses as Reyna while others sell fruit, prepared meals and casual clothing. They look forward to monthly Trust Bank meetings where they participate in an interactive educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Recent topics have been about business administration, savings and how to grow one’s business. Other topics are centered around women’s issues (self-esteem and empowerment), family matters (hygiene, nutrition) and health.
