A loan helped a dessert business upgrade equipment and invest in advertising.

Kendalynn's story

I had a full-time job but wanted a second income that wouldn't take me away from my children and husband. My husband had a good job with benefits, and we were planning to buy a house. However, when COVID-19 hit, he was one of the first employees laid off, leaving us without his salary. The pandemic also affected our family relationships, especially with my grandmother, a breast cancer survivor, who had to shelter in place. Our long-standing Sunday family dinners were paused, so I spent time in the kitchen learning to cook her dishes.

During this period, I watched "Apple Mortgage Cake" on Amazon Prime, which inspired me to start baking. I focused on perfecting pound cakes, using my grandmother's recipes and feedback from friends and co-workers. Despite many failed attempts, I eventually succeeded and found a passion for baking. I created unique flavors like strawberry cream cheese and chocolate cream cheese pound cakes and named my company KB’s Love by The Pound in honor of my grandmother.

The pandemic broke many families, but not ours. My husband found work again, we bought a house, and I left my job as a parole officer to focus on my baking business. My grandmother, now 81, remains a major inspiration. Today, I make a variety of baked goods and find joy in sharing love through baking. When asked why I chose this path, my answer is, "Ask God!"
