A loan helped build classrooms, buy school buses, and improve learning environments in Kenyan schools.

Jackfruit's story

Kenyan schools lack access to affordable capital needed to build classrooms, buy school buses, and enable schools to improve their learning environment.

Jackfruit Finance is a social enterprise providing low-cost schools with affordable loans to increase access to education in Kenya. Jackfruit offers truly affordable pricing by reducing schools' cost of capital and providing a tailored and comprehensive lending product that not only addresses the unique needs of the school and financial stress, but also offers non-monetary advantages like free high classroom design, potable drinking water, discounted school buses and textbooks, and afterschool programs like dance classes.

The company has financed over 240 schools and impacted over 90,000 students, 69% of which are girls.

With a Kiva loan of $100,000, Jackfruit will be able to lend to 32 schools, helping to support an anticipated 10,000 students. This loan will provide an opportunity to learn in a safe, up-to-code, environment and it will also ease the burden of to-and-from school transportation. This is Jackfruit’s first loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.

This loan is special because:

It enables schools in Kenya to obtain affordable, transformative financing.
