A loan helped to invest in supplies for her hammock weaving business.

Pai's story

Pai was previously a farmer from Nan Province in Thailand but transitioned her life's work from the fields to the art of hammock weaving. With three grown children, one of whom continues to farm nearby, Pai and her husband have downsized their agricultural efforts due to the physical demands and challenges associated with aging.

Originally managing a larger plot of land, Pai and her husband passed much of it to their son, allowing them to focus on less strenuous activities. However, the alternative jobs available to Pai proved just as demanding as farming, with unpredictable income streams. Motivated by other village women who have successfully shifted to hammock weaving, Pai decided to embrace this new venture, seeking not only to alleviate the physical strain but also to stabilize her financial situation.

Pai's introduction to artisan hammock weaving marked a significant turning point. This craft offers her a sustainable income and a less physically demanding routine compared to traditional slash-and-burn agriculture, which is fraught with environmental and health challenges. With her natural diligence and quick learning ability, Pai has quickly adapted to her new role as a hammock weaver.

Now seeking her second loan through Kiva, Pai aims to secure her position as a full-time weaver. The funds will be used to purchase essential supplies and yarn, ensuring consistent production and enabling her to embrace weaving as her primary source of income fully.
