A loan helped a member to buy more pigs, pig feed, and ingredients for her delicious icy confections.

Negociantes Chixocol Group's story

Twenty-nine Angelina, a married mother of a five year old son who is in kindergarten, shares that her husband left to find work in the United States three years ago.

Angelina, who has a high school diploma specializing in education, could not find work as a teacher and so she started raising pigs that she fattens and sells. She also started making sno-cones from her home. Now, Angelina would like to add another business and open a bookstore.

She has set a goal of expanding her businesses and creating more income so that she can open a bookstore. She requests her fourth Kiva loan to buy more pigs, pig feed, and ingredients for her sno-cones.

This capable young woman is also the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Negociantes de Chixocol” located in the department/state of Quiche. There are six other women in the group who embroider traditional blouses/”huipiles,” raise chickens, turkeys and pigs, or manage flower farms.

Angelina calls the monthly meeting to order, the ladies make loan payments and then participate in an interactive educational training (health, family, women, business), part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Another component of the program are bi-monthly visits by a traveling nurse who offers all kinds of exams, consults and family planning.

The “Microcredit Plus” program is a life-changing opportunity for Angelina and her friends. Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your much-appreciated participation!
