Thirty-five year old Juana, mother of four children who range in age from five to eighteen, has worked hard so that three of her children can attend school. As an adult, she understands the advantages of a good education. Juana left school after the second grade because she did not like it. She worked with her neighbors doing housework. She is married to a bricklayer.
Fifteen years ago, she started raising chickens that she sells by custom order from her home. But her current main business is weaving and embroidering colorful traditional textiles including blouses/”huipiles” and skirts/”cortes”. She has ten employees who are able to help support their own families! Her goal is to expand the business and have her own locale where she can display and sell her textiles. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy good quality fabric and thread.
Juana is the Treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Paxot II” in the department/state of Quiche. There are six other Maya K'iche women in the group who also work at their traditional textile businesses. They meet monthly, offer each other support, and participate in educational training (business, health, family, women). Every other month, they can receive a visit from a traveling nurse who offers all kinds of exams, consults and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to Juana and her friends!
