A loan helped to buy mulberry for her tapa making business.

Helukakala's story

Helukakala is 54 years old and has five adult children. For more than half of her life she has operated her business of making tapas. Once every week, Helukakala and her eldest daughter join a group of women in the village, and together they perform the making of tapas. They also work together in preparing soft tapas. When her tapas are ready, she sells them to some of her relatives overseas and to local buyers. Helukakala requested a loan, which she will use to buy mulberry and support her business.

This loan is special because:

It provides women with credit in a country where alternative financing is extremely scarce.
