This communal bank is called Nuevo Amanecer. It is made up of women, who are the breadwinners in their family. They strive to get ahead and to improve their businesses, through which they are able to fight for their families. They are also part of the 'Poverty Stoplight' programme.
One of the women is Maria Elena, who is a very active and hard-working person. She remarks that she has a general store, where she works every day providing her customers with a variety of products at different prices.
Maria Elena explains that she started with very little but that she has been slowly growing, thanks to to the effort and sacrifice she has made, to get to where she is today. Her aim is to continue to invest in her work and by doing so, carry on supporting her family.
She is seeking this loan to buy fruit, vegetables, soft drinks, dairy products, bread and cleaning products as well as other items in bulk in order to continue selling as she has been doing.
