Two years ago, Marta's husband left to find work and earn an income in the United States. It is sad for Marta and many others in a similar situation when their husbands leave home and go to “el norte”. She has three children who range in age from five to twelve. Marta attended school for three years and is proud that two of her children are in the first and fifth grades.
Marta weaves and embroiders colorful traditional clothing including blouses/”huipiles”, skirts/”cortes” and belts/”fajas”. She sells by custom order. Marta also raises chickens and turkeys that she sells from her home in the department/state of Quiche. Her goals are to increase her income and have her own locale where she can display her beautiful textiles. She requests her sixth Kiva loan to buy fabric, thread and more chickens.
Eight women who speak Maya K’iche and Spanish have formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Kairos”. They have tortilla shops/”tortillerias”, and raise chickens, turkeys and pigs. They meet monthly with a Facilitator, make loan payments and participate in an educational training, part of the “MIcrocredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care. Recent topics for the training have been about health, savings and effective family communication. Other topics include nutrition, hygiene, business management, women’s issues and family matters. Every two months, a traveling nurse offers them all kinds of exams, consults and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders!
