Corazon De Jesus Group's story

Fifty-five-year-old Teresa, a mother of four grown children who range in age from 23 to 31, is proud that each has a high school diploma. Teresa also graduated from high school and studied music in the university. Her husband is a businessman in the department/state of Quetzaltenango where they live.

For 26 years, Teresa has sold festive decor for all celebrations, clothing for “quinceaneras”(15-year-old celebration for young women), wedding dresses and textiles. She delivers them to different shops in her community and charges a wholesale price. She also has her own shop. Teresa also raises chickens that she sells from her home and in the local market. Her goals are to be a better business administrator and open a new convenience store.

Six Maya K’iche women have elected Teresa to be the President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Corazon de Jesus”. These ladies have convenience stores and sell natural medicines, as well as traditional clothing. They are pleased to participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training (business, health, family, women) and bi-monthly health care services (exams, consults, family planning). A Facilitator designs and conducts the training and a traveling nurse delivers the health care services. The women are tremendously appreciative!
