A loan helped a member to buy shellfish and ingredients for her “ceviche” (marinated fish appetizer).

Jardines De La Loma Group's story

Many countries in Latin America have their own version of “ceviche” that usually consists of shrimp or another shellfish, tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, chiles and onion marinated in fresh lime juice.

Thirty-eight year old Haydee, a mother of four children who range in age from eight to eighteen, has been making “ceviche” for five years in her own little restaurant. She has one employee who helps her with the business.

Her husband is employed by the local government in the department/state of Retalhuleu as a policeman. Haydee also sells American clothing as a street vendor. Her goal is to expand her “ceviche” business to other areas in her community. She requests her third Kiva loan to buy more shellfish and ingredients.

Haydee was elected to be the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Jardines de la Loma” or “Gardens of the Hill”. She calls the monthly meetings to order and the seven other women in the group make loan payments. Their businesses range from raising poultry and animals to managing their convenience stores. A Facilitator designs a training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program consisting of information about health, family, women and business. Recent topics were about effective communication among family members, empowerment and business administration. Every two months, the ladies have access to basic health care services, also part of the program.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your kindness and your generosity!
