A loan helped to buy more cooking oil, hens and Irish potatoes to fry for sale.

Ruth's story

Ruth is 32 years old and lives in the town of Gayaza in the Gayaza region of Uganda. She is married and has two children. For the past 12 years, Ruth has been working hard to manage her catering, which sells fried chips and chicken.

To help expand her business, Ruth has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more cooking oil, hens and Irish potatoes to fry for sale, and this will help Ruth to generate greater profits and manage to provide enough food for her family. Ruth hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her business into a big restaurant.

She is a member of BRAC's Microfinance Program (MF). The program primarily serves small group members, like Ruth, who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but do have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
