A loan helped a member to buy corn to make tortillas and to feed her chickens.

Mujeres De Garcia Group's story

Amanda, 27, mother of two, ages 5 and 7, has set goals to enlarge her home-based tortilla shop ("tortilleria”) and become more financially independent.

She has nine years of formal education and is married to a bricklayer. She opened her tortilleria four years ago, and four months ago started raising chickens she sells by custom order. She'll use her first Kiva loan to buy corn for the delicious tortillas she cooks at meal times.

Six women who live in the department/state of Retalhuleu have elected Amanda as president of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank,“Mujeres de Garcia.” Sharing this loan, some have the same business as Amanda, while others sell regional snacks, fruit and firewood.

They gratefully participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training (business, health, family, women) and bi-monthly health care services (exams, consults, family planning). Both of these “plus” services are essential for their success as women, mothers and entrepreneurs, since they have little or no formal education and the Guatemalan health care system is stretched thin and often unavailable.

Amanda and her friends are building pathways to a more successful future benefiting themselves, their families and their community. They thank Kiva lenders for their kind support!
