A loan helped a member to buy more complete traditional costumes, fabrics and sewing accessories.

Sector Bethel Group's story

Rebeca, twenty-five years old, is a single woman who lives with her father and two brothers in the region of Boca Costa in the department/state of Sololá.

Due to her family's limited resources, she only attended school for six years. Currently, she is studying a sewing diploma that she will use to weave/embroider beautiful traditional blouses called “huipiles”.

Her father and two brothers help with the business. Her goals are to increase the size of her business and generate more income to help her cover personal and family expenses. She plans to use her first Kiva loan to purchase more complete traditional costumes for resale and also purchase fabric, threads and decorations in bulk.

Rebeca and six Mayan K'iche women who live in their area have joined together and formed the Puente de la Amistad Trust Bank “Bethel Sector.” Some of them have the same business as Rebeca while others have convenience stores, corn mills and sell bread.

They happily participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program that includes loans, educational training and healthcare services. Recent training topics designed and delivered by a Facilitator include information on empowerment, business management, saving and recycling. Other topics come from three areas: health, women and family. Every two months, a visiting nurse offers exams, consultations and family planning. Their visit is helpful to them because it would normally be difficult to access these services.
