Enterprising women such as Yani (44 years old) not only make a difference in their families but also in the development of their community. She has six years of education and did not continue due to her parents separating. Yani supported her mother for some years, working as a domestic to generate income for the household expenses. Sadly, she repeated her mother's story. She has been separated from her spouse for many years. She is the mother of three children (over 20) who attended secondary school and university.
Yani sustains her household expenses with the income she has gotten from her business selling seafood for over three years. Due to the rainy season, there is little demand. So, she has decided to start a new business selling casual clothing. Yani asks for her fifth Kiva loan to purchase a variety of clothing.
Yani is the secretary of the Friendship Bridge communal bank Perlas Preciosas de Dios located in the department/state of Quetzaltenango. They are seven women in the communal bank who speak Spanish and have businesses such as convenience stores, selling silver jewelry, fruit, snacks and seafood, and a beauty salon. They benefit from the monthly training when they learn about topics related to business, health, family, and women. The program empowers women, offering them new ideas and essential tools for them to be able to achieve comprehensive development.
Thank you, Kiva lenders!
