A loan helped a member to buy more animals, feed, and oatmeal seeds.

Las Mariposas San Antonio Group's story

Herlinda, age 31, is a woman who has gotten ahead through her businesses. She is married to a farmer and is the mother of two children (ages 3 and 12); the older child is in third grade. Herlinda comes from a poor family, and did not attend school.

For six years, she has been raising pigs, turkeys, and sheep for both sale and consumption. She also grows oatmeal to feed the sheep so that she does not have to buy it. Herlinda requests her third Kiva loan to increase her business. With the funds, she plans to buy animals, feed, and oatmeal seeds. She visualizes having a larger farm.

The seven women who belong to the communal bank “Las Mariposas San Antonio” of Puente de Amista [Friendship Bridge] have businesses in the department/state of Huehuetenango. Most of them work raising livestock and selling medicines. Others have carts where they prepare fried chicken and potatoes, or sell casual clothing. They have little or no education. Thanks to training provided by a facilitator about business, health, women's issues, and family matters, they are able to have successful businesses. In addition to information about planning, budgets, and publicity they benefit from developing larger businesses. These women share what they learn with relatives and friends.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for helping visionary women like Herlinda!
