A loan helped a member to buy fertilizer and additional poultry and sheep to raise.

El Eden Group's story

Thirty-seven-year-old Rafaela, mother of three children who range in age from eleven to sixteen, is married to a farmer who grows corn and potatoes. She has no formal education because her parents didn’t think it was necessary for a girl to attend school. She is proud that her oldest son finished the sixth grade while the younger ones are in the fourth and sixth grades.

One year ago Rafaela opened a convenience store in a room in her home. She also raises chickens, turkeys and sheep, a business she started two years ago. She sells them in the local market in the department of Huehuetenango. She also supports her husband's agricultural business.

Her goals are to expand the inventory of her store and be able to cover basic necessities. She requests her second Kiva loan to buy fertilizer and more poultry and sheep.

Seven women elected Rafaela to be president of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “El Eden”. They all have the same businesses as Rafaela. Since they have little or no formal education, they benefit greatly from monthly educational sessions that cover every day topics like nutrition, hygiene, health, family matters and women’s issues. They also acquire basic business management tools. The training is part of the “Microcredit Plus” program.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your kindness and your generosity!
