A loan helped a member to buy more spare parts and supplies for her motorcycle spare parts business.

Las Rosas Lindas Group's story

Traveling by motorcycle is more affordable and fuel efficient than traditional four-wheeled vehicles. They are growing in popularity throughout Guatemala. Thirty-nine year old Anastasia has a business selling spare parts for motorcycles. She is married and the mother of four children who range in age from ten to fifteen. Anastasia has several businesses and the main one is selling spare parts for motorcycles. She also arranges thread for weaving traditional wrap-around skirts or “cortes”. She sells the finished pieces to a middleman. Because there is a lot of demand for the spare parts, her goal is to open another branch and she requests her fourth Kiva loan to buy more spare parts.

Anastasia joined six other Maya K’iche women to form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Rosas Lindas” in the department/state of Quiche. Some of these ladies have the same businesses as Anastasia while others raise/sell animals or are seamstresses. Since they have little or no formal education, they benefit greatly from monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care. A Facilitator designs interactive training that covers an aspect of four topics: business, health, family women. Every other month, a visiting nurse offers exams, consults and family planning. Both of these “plus” services are essential for their success because the ladies have little formal education and health care is challenging to access.
