Claudia Griselda's story

Claudia Griselda is 41 years old, single and has one child. She lives in the Municipio Distrito Central in the Francisco Morazan province. For the last 10 years, she has been selling chicharrones [soy pork crackling] wholesale in grocery stores, an activity which she carries out at home. Previously, she sold clothes.

Now, she is asking the ODEF [Women's Business Development Organization in Honduras] for a loan of 30,000 HNL to buy soybeans and bottles of oil for making chicharrones. This investment will help her to supply more of her customers. Her goal is to expand the business.

Desde hace 10 años se dedica a la venta de chicharrones de soya al por mayor en pulperías, actividad que realiza en su casa de habitación. Anteriormente se dedicaba a la venta de ropa. Actualmente está solicitando un préstamo a ODEF por la cantidad de 30,000 lempiras para la compra de soya y botes de aceite para la elaboración de los chicharrones. Single mothers are an especially vulnerable segment in many developing countries. A woman is generally left as a single mother for one of two reasons: because her partner has died (often due to conflict, war or disease) or because her partner has abandoned her. These women are forced to play both roles, father and mother, and must provide their children with eveything they need, including education, healthcare, housing, food and clothing. They must do all of this with only one source of income, which is normally lower than what a man in the same circumstances would earn. This situation makes them an especially vulnerable segment in Honduras. ODEF is supporting these women by offering them Kiva loans with interest rates below their standard rate.
