Thirty-one-year-old Herlinda is a single mother of a six-year-old daughter. She is proud that she has been able to send her daughter to kindergarten. For the past six years, she has been earning income from her traditional textile business by weaving and embroidering colorful blouses known as "huipiles." She takes custom orders and fulfills them with the help of three employees. In addition to her textile business, she also raises animals to generate extra income.
Herlinda is pleased with the progress she has made with the income from her businesses. Her goals are to keep progressing, expand the businesses, and find a storefront where she can attractively display her pretty textiles. With her first Kiva loan, Herlinda will buy more fabric, thread, and embroidery patterns.
Herlinda and six other women are members of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Rosas de Cacuben” in the department of Quiche. Some of the ladies are in the same business as Herlinda, whereas others operate tortilla shops or small grain farms. The “Microcredit Plus” program offers loans, health care, and education to the women. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services, including exams, consultations, and family planning. Since many of the women have little or no formal education, they benefit greatly from the monthly educational training sessions covering health, family, women's issues, and business.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to Herlinda and her friends!
