A loan helped a member to buy traditional fabrics and textiles.

Sector 5 Group's story

Young entrepreneurs like 29 year old Isabel not only make a difference in their families and communities but the economy of the country. Isabel is a single mother with a thirteen year old son who is an eighth grade student. Isabel is very proud of him because she was only able to attend school for six years. She supports her household and her son’s educational expenses from the income she earns from her traditional textile business. She sews, weaves and embroiders traditional blouses/”huipiles” and skirts/”cortes”. She sells them along with traditional fabrics online on social media or takes custom orders. Isabel requests her first Kiva loan to buy traditional fabrics and textiles. Her goal is to enlarge her business and increase income!

Isabel has joined seven other Maya K’iche women who live in the department/state of Solola to participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge that includes education and health care along with loan support. Their Trust Bank is called “Sector 5”. These ladies have convenience stores and traditional textile businesses. They benefit greatly from monthly educational training when they learn about topics related to business, health, family and women. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services that include exams, consults and family planning. The program empowers the women bringing them new ideas and essential tools so that they can achieve success!
