Jade 1 Group's story

Magdalena is 22 years old. She grew up with her parents in a community of Cotzal, Quiché. Her parents gave her the opportunity to go to school, but she didn't want to continue, since she wasn't able to solve the exercises in mathematics. She attended school through sixth grade.

She united with her partner at age 16. They have a son. Through her sister-in-law, she learned about the loans that Asociación Chajulense de Mujeres Unidas por la Vida was offering. She spoke with her husband, and they decided to join this group.

She invested the first and third loans in the purchase and expansion of her store [selling] threads for traditional weavings. She invested her second loan in planting and raising coffee. This year, she will invest in the purchase of Alemán threads for making and selling traditional weavings.

Magdalena is the leader of the group "Jade 1." This group is formed by six women, all of Maya Ixil ethnicity. The group will invest in agriculture (50%) and textiles (50%). On average, each group member has two children. The average age of the members of the group is 37. Half (50%) are illiterate, and 50% finished their primary education.
