A loan helped a Minority & Disability-Owned Business (& repeat Kiva borrower!) hire employee & upgrade printing equipment.

Maurice's story

I am a disabled business owner located in Iowa City, Iowa. I am not a quitter, and I will not let my disability hold me back from succeeding or sharing the gifts that God has given me. I am originally from New Jersey, and a chef by trade. I moved to Iowa in 2010 to work alongside the executive chef at Riverside Casino. Shortly after my time at Riverside Casino, I worked at the Marriott and had a few other cooking jobs before eventually becoming the executive chef at ACT. My passion is cooking, and I became a Chef because my mother was a MasterChef and she was also a seamstress. You could say she was a jack-of-all-trades, and this creativity and inventiveness is something I inherited from her.

Although I am passionate about cooking, a few years ago I decided it was time to pursue another creative outlet and passion of mine: printing and design. This is my second round of funding with Kiva and I thank Kiva for being a big part of my recent small business success. I am so appreciative of all Kiva has done to help me meet my business goals.

This loan is special because:

It supports a small business owner with 0%-interest, zero-fee capital.
