A loan helped over a million people access affordable healthcare in Africa.

Zuri Health's story

In much of Sub-Saharan Africa the doctor-to-patient ratio is 1 doctor to 10,000 patients. Distribution of healthcare services is highly concentrated in urban areas while the rural population has severely limited access.

Zuri Health is a social enterprise and virtual hospital that offers a wide array of affordable digital healthcare services, from on-demand consultations with professionals, to innovative payment options and subscription-based models all aimed at making quality healthcare more accessible and convenient. Through the Zuri app, patients can buy medication, chat with doctors, book labs, visitations, and diagnostic tests. Zuri Health also offers consultations via SMS messaging to serve the population without access to smartphones or the internet.

To date, Zuri has provided access to affordable healthcare to over 1 million users, 60% are women and 75% are youth patients.

Kiva’s loan is essential for Zuri Health to purchase a mobile bus clinic to provide healthcare to last-mile, rural Kenyans with limited access to life-saving services. Lending to Zuri supports mobile healthcare that enables a bridge between telemedicine consultations and in-person care for remote, underserved populations. This is Zuri Health’s first loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.

This loan is special because:

It enables access to life-saving healthcare solutions for East Africans.
