A loan helped to buy supplies for her hammock-weaving business.

Pawina's story

Pawina is from a mountain village in Northern Thailand, where she has confronted the challenges of limited job opportunities and hazardous farming conditions in slash-and-burn agriculture. Despite possessing a 12th-grade education, opportunities in her village and further away in the city's factories offer minimal benefits, prompting Pawina to seek an alternative livelihood.

Her journey took a transformative turn when she discovered artisan hammock weaving as a full-time occupation. Learning the craft from a fellow villager, Pawina honed her skills and eventually decided to pursue hammock weaving independently. This shift not only enhanced her quality of life but also provided a crucial boost to her household income, allowing her to work comfortably from home.

Pawina's enthusiasm for hammock weaving is palpable, reflected in her ability to produce intricate designs within just a year of starting. With her children attending school in the village, Pawina is determined to secure a brighter future for her family through her weaving business, which has become a gateway to economic stability.

Now, with the support of a Kiva loan, Pawina aims to further strengthen her hammock weaving enterprise. This loan will ensure a steady supply of materials, sustaining her weaving activities and empowering her to continue improving her economic prospects.
