Mary's story

Mary is 28 years old and is single, living with her parents in Hoskins town in the oil palm province of West New Britain. She is a student attending one of the schools in the province in a tertiary institution. Mary decided to start up her market to take care of her educational costs. Both her parents are unemployed, and this has prompted her to do a market for herself.

Mary started up a small bakery business after learning of the need from the people living near her residence and the bypassers daily using the same road. She has challenges from other sellers in the same area, but she is strong and confident in herself by baking the best and quality buns and donuts, which attract many people.

Over time, Mary saved a small amount of her profits in her bank and has qualified for a small loan. She applied for this loan to purchase more flour bags to increase the number of bags to bake with over two weekly. She will use her new profits to complete her educational costs for the year and save some in her bank for her future needs.
