Sandra, age 40, is a well-known teacher who currently works at a school in her community. Her husband is also a teacher. She is a mother of three children who range in age from 6 to 13. They attend either primary or secondary school.
Sandra has been involved in her family’s businesses from a very young age. Ten years ago, she started her own business selling catalog products and kitchen utensils. She conducts her sales through social networks and occasionally at a stand at the local market. Her goals are to expand her business and have a shop of her own. She is requesting her third Kiva loan to buy popular products that her customers are requesting.
There are seven Spanish-speaking women who live in the Department of Suchitepéquez and have joined together to participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program that consists of loans, training (on topics such as family, women’s issues, and business), and bimonthly medical services (exams, consultations, and family planning). The technical business training that they have received has helped them manage their businesses that include selling casual clothes, catalog products, secondhand clothes, and operating convenience stores. Learning about healthy habits, nutrition, hygiene, and the use of medicinal plants has enabled them to take care of themselves and their families. They often share this knowledge with their family and friends. A facilitator will conduct the training by using illustrations and games to convey the information.
