A loan helped a member to buy used American clothing.

El Xab Group's story

Thirty-seven year old Reyna has been selling American clothing from a rented space for four years. Her eleven year old son and her mother help her with the business. She also takes orders for sewing custom clothing, a skill she learned while taking a special class. Her husband works in a factory making plastic products. Some of their income is earmarked for the continuing education of their two children, who are in the first and fifth grades. Her goals are to increase the size of her businesses, and offer more variety. She is requesting her seventh Kiva loan to buy more used American clothing.

Reyna is the Secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “El Xab” in the department/state of Retalhuleu. There are seven other women in the group who raise chickens, sell regional snack foods, used American clothing, new casual clothing and paper goods. They benefit greatly from participating in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training and bi-monthly health care services. Recent topics for the training were about the importance of recycling and empowerment. Other topics are about business, health, women’s issues and family matters. Bi-monthly health care services that include exams, consults, and family planning are delivered by a traveling nurse who is sensitive to their needs.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for learning about Reyna and her friends and for funding their loan!
