Luteria, 54, a mother of 7 children, ages 17 to 31, had three years of formal education. Four of her children are married and she has 12 grandchildren. As a child, her parents would not let her continue to go to school and instead, she stayed at home weaving traditional colorful blouses or “huipiles”. Her husband is a gardener who works with a neighbor.
Luteria has managed her convenience store for five years. One of her daughters helps her. Three years ago, she began selling coffee seedlings from her home by custom order. She also raises chickens, doves and pigs. Eventually, Luteria wants to sell traditional blouses/huipiles by custom order. With her first Kiva loan, she would like to restock the shelves of her store and buy beverages, corn, fertilizer, and thread.
The women of Maya Kaqchikel elected Luteria to be the President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Trabajadoras de Chivoc” They find the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training (health, women, family, business) and bi-monthly health care services (consults, exams, family planning) to be most beneficial since they have little or no formal education and health care services are scarce and difficult to access. Recent topics for the training were about business administration and empowerment.
Thank you, Kiva lenders! These women will use your loan support in their convenience stores, coffee farms, weaving and animal husbandry businesses!
