A loan helped an urban farmer (and repeat Kiva borrower) purchase bees and equipment for expansion.

Jerry's story

After a thirty-year career as a Chef, I wanted to get closer to the food I worked with. In order to do this, I took classes, visited farms and wrote a business plan to start a livestock farm. My first livestock was honeybees that I raised in my back yard. Then, I realized I couldn't afford the land to raise goats, cows, pigs and chickens.

Not to be detoured, I stuck with honeybees and located hives in backyards thought-out the Milwaukee Metro. People volunteer to host hives. I bottle and label the honey from the neighborhoods their in. I refer to my honey as "honey from the 'hood", as most people can get raw urban honey close to their home.

Now, in my tenth year as an urban farmer and honey producer, I have established the farm as a reliable source for raw local urban honey. I will use this loan to expand, in the Milwaukee Metro area to meet the needs of my local community.

This loan is special because:

It supports a small business owner with 0%-interest, zero-fee capital.
