A loan helped to buy more shoes for resale.

Phionah's story

Phionah is 36 years old and lives in the town of Ggaba in the Kampala Road region of Uganda. She is married and has one child, who is currently in school. For the past 3 years, Phionah has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells second-hand shoes. To help expand her business, Phionah has requested a loan of 1,000,000 Ugandan Shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more shoes for resale, and will help Phionah to generate greater profits, as well as increase her production and attract more revenue. She will manage to buy food for her family. Phionah hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land and build a house of her own. Phionah is a member of BRAC's Microfinance program (MF). The program primarily serves small group members, like Phionah who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
