A loan helped to purchase organic hens and organic feed for them.

Charana's story

Charana is a 46-year-old member of the Akha tribe living in Wawee Village in the hills of Northern Thailand, near the Myanmar border. She is asking for a loan to purchase 700 hens to produce organic free-range eggs for Hilltribe Organics (HTO), the social enterprise which created the market for organic free-range eggs in Thailand, using organic agriculture to help poor farmers like Charana out of poverty.

This will be her first loan with Kiva for her HTO egg farm. Before she started working with HTO, she grew conventional vegetables on her family land and was barely able to make ends meet. Caring for her hens and selling their eggs provides Charana and her family continuous monthly income and allows her to send her children to school.

Hilltribe Organics was named The Most Sustainable Farming Model in Thailand in 2022 by the Thailand Department of Livestock Development and won the 2022 global Sustainable Food Farming Award from UKNGO Compassion in World Farming.

This loan is special because:

It supports vulnerable hill tribe communities in the northern region of Thailand.
