A loan helped a woman-owned halal market bring more halal products to the Burlington community.

Muhuba's story

Originally from Somalia, in 2007 I moved with my 11 children to Burlington, Vermont, after living 12 years in a Kenyan refugee camp. We arrived in Burlington with no English, no jobs, and no car but were determined to be independent. We quickly found work as dishwashers at the University of Vermont. I, along with eight of my children, worked hard to save what money we could which allowed us to buy the halal market just one year after we settled in the city.

As a single mother, it was important to me to keep my sons occupied and out of trouble and to invest in the future of our family through entrepreneurship. I am proud to say that with only a down payment of $20, we were able to pay off the $30,000 to purchase the business in only seven months. The market has not only afforded my family financial stability and independence but has also taught us the useful skills of how to run a business.

This loan is special because:

It supports a small business owner with 0%-interest, zero-fee capital.
