Helen's story

Meet 49-year-old Helen from Liberia. She is single with four children. All her children are currently attending school while living at home. She is a strong businesswoman, who sells milk, coffee, candy, candles, rice, vegetable oil, vita, sugar and other food items. She started the business with some financial help from her friend and learned the trade from her mother. She has no problem with her business and uses a car to transport supplies at her business site. She sells Monday through Saturday for eight hours.

To increase her business, Hellen applied for a loan through BRAC Liberia, a Kiva lending partner, to buy more milk, coffee, candy, candles, rice, vegetable oil, vita, sugar and other food items to sell to her good clients. She likes her business because it earns her profits. She wants to build a big house in the future. She sends thanks and appreciation to BRAC and the Kiva community for their support.

This loan is special because:

It serves low-income individuals in rural Liberia where few alternative funding sources exist.
