Sandra's story

Sandra is 54 years old and married with 3 children. She is originally from West Sepik Province from an inland rural village in Lumi District in Aitape/Lumi Electorate. She is currently living in Lae doing her sales as the product is on high demand in this province.

She has a vast land in her rural village in which she is a farmer of local tobacco grown on the land. She has engaged her family full-time to work on the land to grow this plant.

She is a determined and organized person and consistent in her activity daily making sure the farming is good and all her workers are working on the farm. She has been in the business for over 6 years and with that experience, she is able to move on despite the many challenges like road and travelling costs.

Tobacco is a plant grown locally in the fields which is planted and when it matures, the leaves get dry. This leaf is harvested and dried either over the fire ashes or in the sun heat until the color of the leaf is brown. The leaf becomes sticky in the hands when it is ready for sale.

Though it is known for smoking, it is healthy because no other substances are added to the leaf.

Sandra has saved money in her bank to qualify her to acquire this loan. This loan will help her purchase more seedlings, fertilizers and tools.

She is hardworking and confident in her business and she is capable in repaying her loan within schedule given.

This loan is special because:

It promotes financial independence for marginalized women entrepreneurs.
