A loan helped to buy thread, fabric, and school supplies for her store.

Elena Betzaida's story

As a single mother with only two years of formal education, 23-year-old Elena is determined that her 7-year-old son will have a better foundation and a brighter future. She understands that a good education is essential for him and is proud that he is in the first grade. She reflects that she didn’t like school and didn’t think it was important. Thus, she left her education behind and began working in “tortillerias”/tortilla shops that were far from her rural community in the department of Solola.

She inherited a textile business and bookstore from her father five years ago. She weaves the fabric for colorful traditional blouses called “huipiles” and also resells used ones. Her goals are to expand the businesses and offer a wider inventory to her customers. With increased income, she will be better positioned to meet the needs of her household, including personal expenditures and the educational needs of her son.

Elena feels fortunate to participate in the Friendship Bridge “Bridge to Success” program that gives her access to intensive business development training supplied by a facilitator twice each month. She can obtain effective business management tools that will help her become a more astute entrepreneur and empowered woman. Also, her son will realize benefits as he watches his mother effectively manage and expand her business in a smart and successful way!
