A loan helped to purchase more rice, pepper, bitter ball red oil, charcoal and other items to sell.

Ellen's story

This is 26-year-old Ellen from Liberia. She is living together with her partner and is a mother of 2 kids; her children are currently schooling. She never had the opportunity to attend school.

Ellen runs a retail business selling rice, pepper, bitter ball red oil, charcoal and other items. For the past 13 years, she has been operating her sales and describes herself as a strong businesswoman. She learned how to sell from her mother and started the business with her savings. She transports supplies to her business site by using car. She sells Monday through Saturday, ten hours a day.

To continue her sales, Ellen applied for a loan through BRAC Liberia, a Kiva lending partner. The loan will be used to purchase more rice, pepper, bitter ball red oil, charcoal and other items to sell in order to generate greater profits. She likes her business because it gives her money each day she sells.

In the future, Ellen would like to build a store and continue sending her children to school. She wishes to say thanks.

This loan is special because:

It serves low-income individuals in rural Liberia where few alternative funding sources exist.
