A loan helped a member to buy more corn to sell from her home.

Mujeres El Recuerdo Group's story

Sixty-four year old Felipa shares that she is the mother of ten children all over the age of twenty. The youngest son still lives with her and is continuing with high school. The other nine adult children attended elementary school and have their own families. Felipa has thirty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her husband no longer works and has health issues. Felipa is a vigorous woman who farms corn. She is requesting her third Kiva loan to buy more corn that she sells from her home.

“Mujeres el Recuerdo” is the name that eleven women, including Felipa, have given to their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank. They live in the department/state of Suchitepequez and speak Spanish. They sell corn and tamales, raise chickens and manage convenience stores. Since some, like Felipa, have no formal education and some have attended school for just a few years, they benefit from a monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and health care. Topics range from health, hygiene, nutrition, women’s issues, and family matters to effective business management practices. Every two months, they have access to basic health care services including exams, consults, and family planning.

Felipa and her friends in the Trust appreciate the kindness of Kiva lenders from all parts of the world who fund their loans. Thank you to each of you!
