A loan helped a member to buy a loom, weaving tools and thread.

Dios Es Amor Group's story

Anacleta, a single, twenty-five year old weaver, has a ninth grade education. Her family lived far from a school and lacked funds to send her to high school.

For six years, Anacleta has been weaving beautiful, traditional wrap-around skirts called “cortes”. It is a family business that she participates in and there are four looms, and four employees.

She, along with family members, arranges the thread for the beautiful resulting designs. As one might imagine, this is a time-consuming task and requires great skill. She is able to deliver an average of eight “cortes” each week in the department of Quiche where she lives. Her goals are to sell colourful woven and embroidered traditional blouses called “huipiles” and to expand her business farther away from her home in the department/state of Quiche.

Anacleta joined seven other Maya K’iche women and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Dios es Amor” or “God is Love”. They are all weavers with employees. Although Anacleta is not an officer of the group, she helps the leadership “behind the scenes”.

The “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training (health, family matters, women’s issues, business management) combined with bi-monthly health care services (exams, consults, family planning) helps them build a great foundation for more prosperous lives.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for the role you play in the lives of Anacleta and her friends.
