A loan helped a member to buy oil, tires and an electric generator.

Solidarias De Cubulco Group's story

Twenty-eight year old Gladys worked for two years as a computer science teacher. She had to stop teaching because her family was more important and the school was far away. Her goal has always been to save money. Recently, she has returned to teaching a few classes in a computer facility. She is married to a man who has a motorcycle shop where he sells motorcycles and parts.

The couple has two children, who are two and eight years old. The older child is in the second grade. Gladys' goal is to improve their standard of living and be successful. She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy oil, tires and an electric generator. Gladys is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank (Solidarias de Cubulco) in the department/state of Baja Verapaz.

There are seven other Maya Achi women in the group. The other women own tortilla shops, raise chickens or sell plastic items. They look forward to monthly educational training and are part of the Microcredit Plus program. Recent topics have been about self-esteem and women’s rights. Other topics are drawn from four areas: business, family, women, health. The training is designed by a Facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share the information.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for helping Gladys and her friends help themselves!
