Bertilia is 33 years old, and she could not attend school. She got married at 14 years old to a rubber cutter who worked on a farm for several years. She is the mother of six children (between 5 and 20 years old), and they are in preschool and secondary school.
Two years ago, she decided to start her own business, and she opened a small convenience store where she also sells chicken by the pound. She and her husband also run a small agricultural product business. With the goal of continuing to invest, she is seeking her first Kiva loan. She will buy products for the three businesses.
The seven women in the group live in a rural area in the department/state of Suchitepéquez, and they are part of the "Puente de Amistad" loan group called "Flor Paz." All of the women have businesses, including chicken and pig business, convenience stores, small bookstores, and agricultural products.
They are thankful to be able to participate in the "Microcrédito Plus" program through Puente de Amistad, and it includes loan, monthly education training programs (on health, family, women, business), and bimonthly health services (consultations, exams, pap smears, family planning). These additional “plus” services are essential to the members' success, since the healthcare system in Guatemala is precarious. Additionally, the women have little or no formal education.
Thanks to each of the Kiva lenders!
